June 21st is a date in every music-lovers calendar – Make Music Day is a global grassroots music festival, where all kinds of free music is played in all kinds of spaces, performed by young and old, professional and amateur, beginners and experienced musicians.
This year, we’re inviting you to celebrate Make Music Day with the Connect: Resound live music broadcast from the lush Eden Valley in Cumbria. Choirs from five local primary schools will perform a song of their choice, before coming together for a very special massed voices performance of songs from the musical Dragon Days. Make Music Day started in 1982 as Fête de la Musique, there are now 19,000 events in France with two thirds of the population involved. These days the festival is celebrated in over 120 countries, from China to Argentina, Australia to Nigeria.
This year, one of the themes of Make Music Day UK is rural performance. NYMAZ, the youth music charity which runs Connect: Resound Live is encouraging individuals, ensembles, schools and other groups to get out into the countryside on 21st June to make music together. We’ve already heard some very creative ideas for venues and locations – we can’t wait for you to take your music to the hills, mountains and beaches!
